Electrical, Instrumentation, Controls and Automation – Melones Island, Panama – 2012
Matrix PDM Engineering provided process, piping, electrical and controls, civil and structural engineering design services for a new bunkering tank farm facility on Melones Island, located five miles off the coast of Panama. Additional services provided included construction engineering support, and major equipment procurement to assist Tarsco with the installation of 14 heavy fuel oil storage tanks and two diesel fuel tanks on the island.
All of the tanks were designed with lining and cathodic protection, including air sparging and hot oil heating on the HFO tanks. Level control, temperature indication and tank inventory management systems were also included in the design, along with secondary containment for each tank area. Also, all lighting and lightning protection was also provided throughout the island’s facilities.
The island, previously uninhabited, was cut to the elevation of 14 meters at roadways and top/dike and 11.7 meters at tank level and containment to provide appropriate surface accommodations for the complete tank farm facility.
Additionally, Matrix PDM designed the infrastructure facilities on the island. Buildings provided include a mess hall, maintenance building, power house, control room and living quarters for approximately 20 operations personnel.
